Vegas/Hurricane

This past weekend Brian, Savannah, Erica and I drove to Las Vegas to visit Aron. We left on Thursday night and it would have been a fast trip if it wasn't for the EXPLOSIVE diaper situation between Baker and State line. I started Savannah on solids for the first time last Wednesday evening. I am assuming that was the reason for the blow out. On Friday, while Aron was working, we all drove to Hurricane to visit my cousin Lisa, her husband and her 3 cute kids. Her youngest was born on the same day as Savannah. Lisa has the most amazing house. It looks like something right out of a Pottery Barn catalog. She made a great dinner including bread sticks from scratch (Between Brian, Erica and myself I think we had 14 of them). After dinner we went out to the mountains and shot guns. Brian and Lisa are really good with the shot gun. Me... not so much. I mostly used the 22.

Here are some pictures of the trip. The good ones taken in Hurrican are by my cousin Lisa. She is such a great photographer.

Talking to Grandma and the Library

Today Savannah and I went to the Fullerton Library with our friends Kristine and Anna. There is a toddler summer reading program at the library and we went to check out if the girls would like it. I think Savannah really liked it. They read one book, sang songs and had a bubble machine. Of course the kids went crazy for the bubble machine.

The High Chair

I put the high chair together last night. It took a while since there were a MILLION pieces. The chair was a gift from Brian's brother Aron before Savannah was born, but I have had it stored in the garage. I love this chair. Savannah sits up so well in it and I can't wait to start her on solids. Since she had a cold for the past 3-4 days I decided to wait just a couple more days until she is better to start the rice cereal.

Is this my Baby?

It's funny how I no longer open our mail box and find Lucky, Glamour, or Cosmo. In their place are American Baby and Parenting- Early Years. I saw the newest Cover of Parenting and thought, "This is my baby in 3 or 4 months!" When I showed it to Brian he said this is the image he has had in his mind of what she will look like.

Just like her Uncle Peter, Savannah has become a fan of Sesame Street. I DVRed a couple of episodes just to see if she would be interested. I play them for her while she is in her jumper and she is just glued to the TV screen. She smiles, giggles and jumps during the entire show. Sesame Street has come up with the mix of everything to capture the audience of kids. Even though Savannah is 5 months old there are certain characters she already can recognize and really likes: Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby and Telly Monster (I had to look those up on http://www.sesamestreet.com/).

Here are just two clips showing her reaction to Sesame Street. I have to admit the show is pretty good.

Svannah Update

On the 13th Savannah turned 5 months old. She has developed such a personality. She smiles and giggles ALL THE TIME, and we just love it. Brian was able to make her laugh for the first time tonight. She loves it when we kiss her tummy and her cheeks.

She wore this outfit to church last Sunday. It was her first time wearing tights.

She sucks her thumb while she sleeps. When I tried to pull it out today she sucked as hard as she could and flexed her arm.

Janie and Jack is having a HUGE sale and we picked up this outfit. I love these shoes. She definitely has room to grow in this outfit, but it is so cute.

A Big Decision... Ph.D.?

Throughout my college career I have had only a handful of women professors. Two of them, Dr. Zoe Engstrom and Dr. Candice Ybarra, had a profound impact on me. They both exhibited characteristics of leadership, strength, intelligence and compassion. Both of them encouraged me to be a better student and to develop my own thought. Although I have had male professors that had these qualities I feel that I connected with Dr. Engstrom and Dr. Ybarra more because they are women.

Dr. Engstrom helped ignite my desire to pursue a Master Degree. I applied to Cal State Northridge and Long Beach for a Masters in Consumer Affairs. Northridge accepted me and, unexpectedly, Long Beach denied me. I had also applied for my MBA at Chapman. This was an off-the-wall idea that my company’s CEO encouraged me to pursue that was a real long shot. I remember coming home from my family’s Canadian vacation when I got the acceptance letter in the mail. I was ecstatic and immediately felt it was the right decision to go to that school.

Dr. Ybarra is the most intelligent woman I know. She teaches the capstone courses in the Business department at Chapman. I would go to each class excited to soak up all of her knowledge and leave excited to share that knowledge with anyone who would listen. I can remember driving home from each class and calling Brian to tell him everything that I had learned. It was Dr. Ybarra that helped me discover my dream of being college professor.

I applied to Chapman for a Ph.D. in Educational Studies. This was not an Ed.D. program, but a true Ph.D. Within the program there are three sub-programs. I selected Cultural and Curricular Studies. This would allow me to teach almost any subject and specialize in curriculum and text book writing. I passed every step and made it through all of the interviews. There were over a hundred people applying and Chapman was only taking 18 (6 for each sub-program). I found out in April I was not accepted, and was waitlisted. It is obvious to say I was heartbroken. I wanted to have an impact on other female students just as Dr. Engstrom and Dr. Ybarra had on me. When I prayed about my decision to apply it felt right. I felt lost and confused after I didn’t make it in.

This week I received a call from the Director of the Ph.D. program. He said, “We are offering you a spot in the fall cohort for the Ph.D. in Educational Studies.” I was flustered and didn’t know what to say. Apparently one of the six people chosen for Cultural and Curricular Studies program dropped out, and I was first on the waitlist.

The director gave me until Friday to make a decision. It was such a strange feeling. I had come up with so many reasons why it was a good thing I did not get into the program that it almost felt wrong to now say yes. I thought and prayed about it, and Brian did too. At first Brian didn’t feel right about it. Many people I discussed my pending decision with made me feel that I would be hurting my family, hurting Savannah, and hurting myself in the process. I looked over the program’s details over and over again trying to feel something to help me make a solid decision. I wrote in my journal everything I felt. There were pros and cons, but ultimately I felt that I receive confirmation that this was the right move for me AND my family. Brian told me he had the same confirmation and he would fully support me.

Yesterday I called the Director and accepted their offer to join the program.
I will be on the part-time track for four years. The first three years are classes two nights a week from 4:20-7:20 with summers off. The final year will just be researching and writing my dissertation.

I think my sister-in-law said it best, “This was your plan. This is what you are supposed to do.” It was her phone conversation that helped me the most. Stephanie is an amazing person that I love and admire. She was in school completing her teaching credential with a small baby AND pregnant with another. I think of her children now and do not see anything but happiness. Her children were young enough that do not remember her going to classes, but instead have a strong, loving bond with their mother. She is my inspiration to be able to balance it all, put my family first and be the best mother I can be.

While some may feel that my decision is selfish I feel that I am doing the exact opposite. I am creating an opportunity for the future to successfully help provide for my family while only having to work part-time as a professor. This career is my dream, but it is also my dream to have more children and to be able to spend as much time as possible with them. The most important thing is that it feel right to me AND it feels right to Brian.

I am still getting negative feedback from people I share this exciting news with and I started to feel afraid to tell anyone else. This post was written to document my feelings about my decision and to gain the support of family and friends.

Random Stuff

Brian got a framed signed Matt Hasselbeck jersey for his graduation. Brian took down our shelf and hung the jersey above the computer. Then he moved some of the other Seattle stuff on other walls in his office. The office is a random room in the middle of the condo. It is between the bedroom, the living room and the bathroom. It has two closets in this little room. The condo was built in the early 60's when dressing rooms were very popular. It is the only room in the house that Brian can hang his sports/Seattle stuff.

Savannah has a bunny wash cloth that she loves. It has gotten to the point that she will not let it go while in the tube. It's kind of convenient that she sucks on it and rubs it on her face. It's like she helps wash her gums and face. The video clip is not uploading. Not sure why, but I will tried to upload later.
She even likes to hold it after the bath is over.

Her adorable bottom lip. When she is hungry it pops right out.
Every night we all go out into the courtyard and lay on a blanket. We just play around. Tonight it was a little chilly so we put Savannah in her super cute bear zip-up, but we were sad to find out it doesn't fit anymore.

Savannah had on a little ballerina outfit today and it just looks so cute on her. She also had socks that had ballerina designs on them but they weren't on for this picture.

Locked Out

After I got home from work Brian, Savannah and I went out side and laid on a blanket on grass. It was so nice just to be outside. Our condo is located in the part of our complex that is used as a major entrance/exit. There is a walk way right next to every window. Although we have ADT security Brian feels to weird keeping the blinds open for people to look at our stuff. As a result of keeping the blinds closed 95% of the time we NEVER see the SUN! I have to admit that there is a new neighbor that goes out of his way to look inside to see if we are home just so he can wave. It can make dinner a little awkward. Well, we had fun just playing with Savannah outside in the courtyard. As it started to get cold we walked back to our condo to discover Brian locked the door. He didn't seem nervous since he has a hide-a-key. Well... I forgot to tell Brian that I gave that key to our friends the Mattingly's. Brian tried our neighbor who has a set- not home. Just then Savannah starts to cry since she is hungry. Brian decided just to walk to the Mattingly's hoping they were home. I had no other choice but to nurse Savannah right in front of our front door. About 25 minutes later my hero comes walking in with a key.

BIG Mistake!

Last weekend Brian, Savannah and I went to Sam's Club to buy in BULK. It was one of those trips when you knew you would spend more than you planned since we were hungry and had expensive cleaning/paper good items on our list. Well, by the time we got all the way up and down every aisle we saw candy. I am a HUGE Peanut M&M fan and saw a massive 48 bag box full of them. I did everything I could to convince Brian that we should buy them. Including:

1. The unit price per bag is significantly less than the vending machine at work and am/pm.
2. You won't have to run to Target at 9:45 at night to pick me up a bag.
3. I promise not to eat them all at once... promise!
4. They will stay more fresh in individual bags than buying one big bag at Target.
5. Your wife will be oh so happy.

So, being the loving hubby he is, he put them in the cart! We have Black and Decker cabinets in the garage for bulk purchase and thought we should put the M&Ms in with the rest of the stuff. I started with only put 3 bags in the house. Here is where the BIG mistake comes in... I am eating them ALL RIGHT NOW. I cannot control my fingers. They just keep tearing each bag open and keep popping them in my mouth. I find myself making random trips to the garage just to bring in more bags of M&Ms. Right now I think that most of my daily protein came from the peanuts in the candy.

Sadly, I am eating a bag right now...O-Wait... now they are gone. On a positive note -Garage Trip!

4 1/2 Check-Up

Savannah went in for her 4 1/2 month check-up today. Again, she is above average for height and weight. She now weights 16 pounds 4 ounces (90th percentile) and is 28 inches long (95th percentile). Also, her head circumference was 16 inches. They said it was pretty normal.

Since I had to work I met Brian and Savannah at Kaiser. At Savannah's 2-month appointment I told Brian that Savannah and I both cried when she got her vaccinations. This time Brian kept telling me that I could wait outside and he would comfort her while she got her shots. He told me that he is much stronger than me when it comes to things like this. I agreed that he is stronger, but I kept declining his offer. During the first shot there was a delayed response. It was as if she was trying to figure out what pain is and then quickly realizes she doesn't like it. She it a pitch we had never heard before and her face turned bright red. I think it wouldn't seem as bad if our baby cried, but Savannah seriously is a super mellow baby and hardly cries. As I am singing her favorite song, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, I looked over and saw the horror on Brian's face. He later told me that he doesn't know if he could do that again. He felt like Savannah was mad at him afterward. Her feet swelled, but she was back to her happy self in just an hour or so.
